The Cooperage - Pershore
Nearly 10 years after submitting the initial application for
a change of use and conversion of the Brandy Cask pub in Bridge Street Pershore,
Worcestershire into 8 apartments, the project is now nearing completion.
Following a successful planning appeal decision granted in mid-2016, work started on site in September 2016 with enabling works to the roof. These included the installation of a bat loft in an existing roof space.
Twelve months later the restoration of the Grade 2 listed 18th
and 19th century buildings is nearing completion.
Over the period of construction the extensive riverside
gardens have been kept in good shape by Shirley Jones and Smart Cut. Avon
Navigation Trust have checked over and carried out repairs to the landing stage
and landscaping works to create a seating area for residents have been
completed.
13 new parking spaces have been laid out and a new traffic access
system involving an automatic bollard and impressive entrance gate has been
installed.
Internally, building works have included the installation of
a platform lift serving 4 landings.
Timber and Damp works and the removal of years of redundant fabric and a toilet extension preceded the main programme of works to form 8 new one and two bedroomed apartments. As construction has progressed many purchaser requirements have been accommodated. Listed fabric has been protected and, where possible, beams have been treated and exposed. The character of the buildings externally and internally has been preserved and enhanced by the sensitive scheme undertaken. An external staircase, veranda and canopy will complete the new courtyard ensemble – reflecting similar structures to be seen elsewhere in this Georgian riverside town celebrated as one of England’s 51 “Gem” towns noted by the Council for British Archaeology as being worthy of special consideration for historic preservation.
The neighbouring Star Hotel has flourished under new
management. Following the closure of the Brandy Cask many loyal customers have found
a new home for their custom.
