Electric boilers reign supreme in freezing weather

The recent bitterly cold weather exposed all sorts of issues with the UK's heating systems.

The performance of condensing boilers was a somewhat unforeseen issue for most people. The freezing of our own condensate drain at home caused flooding beneath the boiler in our utility room and was something which we had had no previous experience with. Extreme temperatures had clearly not been considered by our plumber when the system was installed - otherwise the condensate drainage pipe would have been lagged. It appears that we were not alone in experiencing the inconvenience of a flooded utility room this Christmas. Indeed, this problem seems to have been a common complaint judging by national press comment.

For some time at Broadway Heritage we have championed the installation of electric boilers in our new homes. These boilers are clean and require minimal maintenance. They consume the appropriate amount of energy for the job at full or off-peak tariffs. They don’t have condensate drains and therefore, when our utility room was flooding over Christmas, I was comforting myself with the knowledge that the purchasers of our new homes in Weston, Bath, Ascot and beyond would not be encountering similar problems to me!
